WiMAX Forum announced new licensing fee policy on November 3, 2009. Vendors have to be aware that this update policy becomes effective immediately.
WiMAX Forum Certification License Fee Cap Policy
¡EAny vendor will now have an option to either pay a fixed $10,000 fee for all units shipped or to pay $0.25 per unit shipped capping at 60,000 units. The licensing fee for base stations and reference designs remains at the fixed $10,000 rate.
¡EReduce from $3,000 to $500 fee to be entered into the product registry for subsequent listing of a product that gets recertified.
¡ENo additional licensing fee for multi-mode devices (i.e., multimode= WiMAX / Wi-Fi, WiMAX / 3G)
Q&A
Q1: Will the $0.25 rule affect already certified products?
A1: No- This only applies to new products being submitted for certification.
Q2: When is the $0.25 rule in effect?
A2: Immediately.
Q3: How does this affect the product family rules delineated in the CPRM?
A3: This does not affect the product family rules. Either the set fee or the unit fee would apply to the whole family of products.
Q4: What is the licensing fee for products that support multiple profiles?
A4: The licensing fee is per certified product. There is no additional cost for products that support multiple profiles.
Q5: How is the WiMAX Forum going to collect the licensing fees.
A5: Once a product is submitted to the product registry, WiMAX Forum staff will contact the company to request either the fixed fee or
the unit fee. The unit fee requests will continue quarterly until the 60,000 unit cap is obtained.
Q6: What are the advantages of either the $10,000 or $0.25 fees?
A6: Either spend $10,000 now for product runs greater than 40,000 or amortize the licensing fee over the expected life of the certified
product which reduces risk for smaller product runs.
Q7: What about the fees associated with either a Class I or Class II change?
A7: These fees have been revised to reflect the WiMAX Forum cost to process the change in our product registry. This is now fixed at $500.
Q8: How is the WiMAX Forum going to ensure that the per unit licensing fees are reported and collected?
A8: The WiMAX Forum staff will track each product and if a vendor selects per unit option will request a quarterly payment as to the quantities shipped. Payment/response is expected within 30 days of notification. This caps at 60,000 units.
