Reminder: Wi-Fi Alliance Regulatory Update

From 10th August 2009, Wi-Fi Alliance will remove the Marvell station and replace with the Intel station as the External Registrar in Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) Certification Test. This will be applied to WPS Test Plan version 1.8

Both WPA2 and 11n Draft 2.0 Certification Tests will add new testing items of EAP methods AKA (Authentication and Key Agreement) and FAST (Flexible Authentication via Secure Tunneling) from 16th August 2009. Without using these EAP types for the devices listing in Category 2 and Category 3 will result in failure of obtaining Certification of the DUT (Device Under Testing). Devices in Category 1 may support these EAP types so that they are not required to pass the test. These requirements will be applied to the WPA2 v1.8.5 and 11n Draft 2.0 v1.5.7 Test Plans.

EU Commission Sets Eco Design Requirements for Electric Motors, Household Refrigerators and Circulators

The Commission of the European Union (EU) has issued a regulation implementing new energy efficiency requirements for electric motors, House Refrigerators and Circulators.

The regulations, which were published in July in the Official Journal of the European Union, are considered an implementation measure under the EU’s Eco-Design Directive, 2005/32/EC, which give the Commission the authority to establish minimum efficiency standards for energy-using products. To date, the Commission has issued nine separate eco-design regulations.

Eco Design Requirements for Electric Motors
European Commission adopted the ecodesign regulation No 640/2009 on electric motors. The regulation sets requirements on motor efficiency which should result in electricity saving of 11% by 2020, compared to the situation without taking any measures. The regulation will enter into force the 10th of August 2009

Requirements for Household Refrigerators
The European Commission adopted the ecodesign regulation 643/2009 on household refrigerating appliances. The regulation sets requirements on energy consumption in the use phase and product features designed to ensure more environmentally friendly use of household refrigerating appliances by the end-user. This regulation aims at strengthening the energy consumption decrease by 2020. The regulation will enter into force the 10th August of 2009.

Requirements for Circulations
The regulation sets requirements on energy efficiency and product information which should result in electricity saving of 42% by 2020, compared to the situation without taking any measures. The regulation will enter into force the 10th of August 2009.

California Proposes Amendments to Appliance Energy Efficiency Regulations

California has proposed two amendments to the California Code of Regulations (CCR), Title 20. These Appliance Efficiency Regulations were established in 1976 to reduce California's energy consumption and are updated periodically to allow consideration and possible incorporation of new energy efficiency technologies and methods. Twenty-one categories of appliances are included in the scope of these regulations. The regulations apply to appliances sold in California, except those sold wholesale in California for final retail sale outside the state, and those designed and sold exclusively for use in recreational vehicles or other mobile equipment.

Key Points Under the Proposed Amendments:

ĦE Docket Number 08-AAER-1A
Under this amendment, the proposed changes will be incorporated to address energy efficiency of general service fluorescent lamps (bulbs), reflector and general service incandescent lamps. Applicability is expanded from torchieres, metal halide and under-cabinet luminaires to include portable luminaires (portable table top and floor lamps). The proposed regulations for portable luminaires will include requirements for incandescent bulb replacement. Options specified in the regulations are acceptable for portable luminaires as of January 1, 2010. Official Document see here

ĦEDocket Number 08-AAER-1B
This amendment would make changes to requirements for external power supply to bring the CEC-400 into agreement with marking requirements of ENERGY STAR Program for Single Voltage External AC-DC and AC-AC Power Supplies version 1.1. This change will help alleviate confusion regarding product efficiency classifications. Official Document see here
