Wi-Fi Alliance Security Roadmap Announcement

The Wi-Fi Alliance recently endorsed a 3-year phased plan to remove support for older security protocols from Wi-Fi CERTIFIED interoperability testing. The change is a stronger expression of Wi-Fi Alliance's position that Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA2) with Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption is the recommended security option and is consistent with the public positions of major technology consortiums. IEEE has deprecated Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) and is in the process of deprecating the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) encryption algorithm.

Phased changes to the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED testing program begin in 2Q 2010 and transition through the end of 2013. A phased approach was implemented to provide backward compatibility while companies incorporate program changes into their product portfolios. Prohibition of TKIP in access points begins 1 January 2011; as of 1 January 2014 WEP or TKIP are prohibited in all Wi-Fi CERTIFIED devices.
